What To Expect

Singapore sits just one degree north of the equator, which means it has a classic tropical rainforest climate. There are no distinct four seasons here. Instead, you get two main settings: sunny and hot, or rainy and hot. The temperature stays remarkably consistent throughout the year, typically hovering between 25°C and 33°C.

The real game-changer is the humidity. With levels often soaring above 80%, the air can feel thick and heavy. You’ll feel it the moment you step out of the airport. At first, it might feel like walking into a steam room, but your body will adapt. The key is to embrace it as part of the authentic Singaporean experience.

The Two Monsoons: Wet & Wetter

While the temperature remains steady, the rainfall is a different story. Singapore has two main monsoon seasons that dictate when you're most likely to encounter a downpour.

The Northeast Monsoon (December To Early March)

This is the wetter season, especially from December to January. You can expect more frequent and prolonged periods of rain. It's not all doom and gloom, though. The rain often provides a refreshing break from the heat, and the city is well-equipped to handle it. Covered walkways connect many buildings and MRT stations, so a sudden shower rarely ruins your plans.

The Southwest Monsoon (June To September)

This season is generally drier but is known for its dramatic pre-dawn thunderstorms, known as "Sumatra squalls." These can be intense, with strong winds and heavy rain, but they usually pass within an hour or two. The afternoons are often hot and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities after a stormy start.

The periods between the monsoons (April to May and October to November) are known as the inter-monsoon seasons. These months are often characterised by hot afternoons and frequent, heavy thunderstorms that build up and break in the late afternoon.

Beat The Heat

Singapore’s sunshine is uplifting, but it can get intense! Here’s how you can keep your cool (literally):

  • Seek Shade: Whether you’re walking or waiting, look for covered walkways, bus stops with shelters, underground walkways or leafy trees along the roads.
  • Try Cooling Tissues & Fans: Carry cooling wet tissues or a handy portable fan to feel instantly refreshed when outdoors.
  • Take Indoor Breaks: Don’t power through if you’re feeling drained. Step into a mall, library or café to rest and cool off.
  • Use Sunblock: Don’t forget to protect your skin. Always apply sunblock before heading outdoors and reapply throughout the day.
