Packing Checklist Singapore

Packing Tips For International Students To Singapore

Packing for Singapore is a bit different from preparing for a semester in London or Toronto. With its tropical climate, strict laws and a fusion of modernity and tradition, Singapore has its own set of packing musts.

Clothing

Light and Breathable Tops

Think cotton T-shirts, tank tops and breathable blouses. Technical fabrics like moisture-wicking materials are a lifesaver.

Casual Bottoms

Shorts, skirts and lightweight trousers work best. Avoid thick denim or fleece lined pants; they’re sweat magnets.

Rain-Resistant Gear

With quick, tropical downpours a frequent occurrence, pack a compact, foldable umbrella or a lightweight raincoat.

Comfortable Footwear

Flip-flops for quick trips to the grocery store, comfortable sneakers for campus treks and a pair of formal shoes for special events.

Modest Clothing for Visiting Religious Sites

A couple of options to cover your shoulders and knees will be respectful and practical for temple and mosque visits.

Activewear

Perfect for Singapore’s fitness culture, hikes through MacRitchie Reservoir or an afternoon run along Marina Bay Sands.

Gadgets & Tech

Laptop/Tablet

Essential for your studies and entertainment.

Smartphone & Charger

This is a given! Your entire life is probably on your phone.

Portable Power Bank

For long campus days or when you're out and about.

Universal Adapter

Your chargers from home may not fit Singapore's Type G plug!

Headphones/Earbuds

Great for focusing in study spaces - best if they're noise-cancelling as well!

External Hard Drive

Backup important files, documents and large sized projects.

Important Documents

Passport & Student Visa

Make sure they're valid and within the required expiry date. Have multiple digital and hard photocopies just in case!

University Acceptance Letter & Enrolment Papers

Always have them on hand in case they're needed at immigration.

Accommodation Details

If you managed to secure accommodation in advance, have the booking details, host contact details and lease printed out and in digital form as well!

Medical Records

Health checkup results, prescriptions, diagnosis letters and other important medical documents.

Insurance Documents

Travel insurance, medical insurance or contents insurance - have them on hand.

Emergency Contact List

Note down local helplines, university contacts and your embassy’s phone number. Have both digital and physical copies just in case!

Home Comforts & Personal Items

Photos & Momentos

To personalise your space and ease the homesickness.

Favourite Snacks From Home

Pack a few of your go-to treats to enjoy a comforting taste of home whenever you need it! Make sure they aren't banned in Singapore though. (Yes, chewing gum really is banned)

Reusable Water Bottle

Stay refreshed and energised in Singapore’s humid climate with a trusty reusable water bottle—it’s not just practical, it’s an eco-friendly win!

Reusable Shopping Bags

Singapore encourages eco-friendly habits!

Your Favourite Toiletries

While Singapore has a wide variety of options, if you’re loyal to specific brands that make you feel amazing, pack a stash to keep your confidence soaring.

Bedding

Your comfort matters! If you love the feel of your own cozy blanket or pillowcase, pack something lightweight to bring a bit of “home” to your new adventure.

What You DON'T Need

Singapore is globally renowned for offering just about everything you could need or want! Here’s what’s better left out of your suitcase.

  • Winter Wear: It doesn’t snow here, and you won’t need it unless you plan to travel elsewhere.
  • Unnecessary Appliances: Your accommodation will likely provide essentials like a microwave or iron.
  • Too Much Stationery: There’s a plethora of affordable stationery shops like Popular and Typo throughout the city.

Rule Of Thumb: If it’s heavy, bulky or easily available in Singapore, don’t pack it. Save your luggage space for irreplaceable items (documents, personal keepsakes, specific clothing styles).
